Tilt and turn hardware turns one sash into two windows: tip the handle to 90° and it swings inward like a casement, tip it to 180° and the top edge leans in for ventilation while the sash stays secured on all other sides. Whether that flexibility is worth the extra hardware cost depends on where the window sits.
Where tilt and turn earns its keep
Monsoon ventilation is the strongest argument. In the tilt position, rain driving at the façade largely runs off the outer face rather than entering, so a room can be aired during a downpour. On upper floors with small children, the tilt position gives airflow without an opening anyone can climb through. And cleaning the outer glass from inside is straightforward when the sash swings in.
Where a casement is the better answer
Casements cost less, both in hardware and in fabrication time. Where a window opens onto a balcony you will use, a full outward-opening sash on good friction stays is simpler and leaves the internal space clear. Tilt and turn sashes swing inward, so anything sitting on the sill or a curtain hanging close will get in the way.
What the hardware demands
A tilt and turn system is a multi-point mechanism, and it is unforgiving of a sash that is out of square. It needs accurate fabrication and correct 3D hinge adjustment at installation. Fitted well it will run for years; fitted carelessly it binds. A casement on friction stays is far more tolerant of a millimetre or two of error.
A practical split
Most homes we supply use tilt and turn on bedrooms and upper floors, and casements or sliders everywhere else. That puts the money where the function is actually used.
